Back-breaking stuff. I hit solid rock! The trench is about six metres long. I went through three electric hammers ... and a considerable amount of pain!
The trench is necessary to anchor the pipes and prevent them from rolling down the hill. It doesn't need to be very deep if you're on level ground.
